Genomic testing is an important piece your health puzzle.

Many of my patients come to me saying that they are taking the recommended supplements or prescribed medications and feel no change or perhaps feel worse. I know how frustrating this can be, being in the exact same boat several years ago.

I noticed when I was around new carpeting or fresh paint, I would experience fatigue, brain fog, muscle aches and facial flushing.  This would last for hours to days depending on exposure.  Genomic testing finally answered the question of why this happens to me and what I could do to feel better.

  • Do you feel worse after eating so called healthy foods?

  • Have you taken a prescription medication and it had the exact opposite effect?

  • Do you react to cleaning agents?

  • Do perfumes or fragrances bother you?

  • Ever take a B complex and feel worse?

  • You've been told acidophilus is supposed to help your gut and yet you get no relief...

These questions can be answered by simply spitting into a tube.  Genomic testing is non-invasive and can be done in the privacy of your home.

Test kits can be ordered through 23andme.  Your saliva contains DNA from cells in your mouth.  23andme’s CLIA-certified lab extracts DNA from cells in your saliva sample. Then the lab processes the DNA on a genotyping chip that reads hundreds of thousands of variants in your genome.

Your genetic data is analyzed, and we generate your personalized reports based on well-established scientific and medical research. Your 23andme raw data file is required to perform this service and will be run through proprietary analytic software to look beyond ancestry and the 23andme health reports. (please note that a separate software vendor fee is charged).

Functional Medicine providers use scientific principles, advanced diagnostic testing, and treatments other than drugs or surgery.

Our goal is to restore the body's primary physiological processes so patients can enjoy optimal health.

Functional Medicine Heals a Key Health Care Gap

Today's health care system is in trouble because it applies a medical management model that works well for health problems ranging from acute to chronic.

If you have a heart attack, accident, or sudden lung infection such as pneumonia, you certainly want a quick-thinking doctor to use all the quick-acting resources of modern medicine, such as life-saving technology, surgery and antibiotics. We are all grateful for such interventions.

However, prescribing drugs, surgery, and other acute care treatments often does not succeed in helping those with chronic, debilitating ailments, such as diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal/SIBO, or arthritis.

Another—two pronged—approach is needed. That's where Functional Medicine comes in...

First: We must add what's lacking in the body, to nudge its physiology back to a state of optimal functioning.

Second: We need to remove anything that impedes the body from moving toward this optimal state of physiology.

Your body naturally wants to be healthy.

By adding what's lacking and removing what's contributing to conditions, patients create a bodily healing environment.

To do this, Functional Medicine practitioners use advanced laboratory testing to identify the root cause or causes of the patient's health problem. Old-fashioned medical diagnosis helps too, in the form of listening carefully to the patient's history of symptoms and asking questions about his or her activities and lifestyle.

For treatment, Functional Medicine practitioners use a combination of natural agents (supplements, herbs, nutraceuticals and homeopathics), nutritional and lifestyle changes, and pharmaceuticals (if necessary) to prod a patient's physiology back to an optimal state. In addition, educating the patient about their condition empowers them to take charge of their own health, ultimately leading to greater success in treatment.
